The Gandhi-King Connection: The Legacy Passed On |

by Dr. H.V. Shivadas, D.D. Mohandas K. Gandhi, known to the world as The Mahatma, or 'Great Soul', brought a great gift to the modern world. That gift was the light of Non-Violence, of Service to the Community and of Social Justice. His life served as an example and this light became a torch which illuminated our world and which saved us from our own inhumanity to each other. The torch was carried by many hands. They included Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, the principal of Morehouse College, who returned from India as one of the growing number of African-American disciples of Mahatma Gandhi. When Dr. King entered Morehouse at the age of 15, Mays became one of the great influences in his life. And there, the torch was passed on. In February of 1959, Dr. King and his wife spent a month in India studying Gandhi’s techniques of nonviolence as the guests of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. |

The Gandhi Foundation of USA was founded on October 26, 1997 in anticipation of the installation and dedication of the statue of the Mahatma Gandhi at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. The purpose of the foundation is to be an activist organization focusing to focus entirely on the practical application of the philosophies of Gandhi and King, thus establishing a meaningful continuity in honoring both Gandhi and King. |

Every moment of your life is infinitely creative and the universe is endlessly bountiful. Just put forth a clear enough request, and everything your heart desires must come to you. As soon as we lose the moral basis, we cease to be religious. There is no such thing as religion over-riding morality. Man, for instance, cannot be untruthful, cruel or incontinent and claim to have God on his side. Be the change that you want to see in the world. |
